I first started working with handmade paper while in grad school back in 2004. It was a journey that would ultimately lead me to found the papermaking studio, Pulp + Deckle in Portland, OR in 2012. Over the years I've utilized recycled fabrics like my grandfather's old flannel shirts, and harvested local plant materials like yellow flag iris, to make paper that invokes people and places. The embedded memories in the fiber of the paper speak to me about the memories of my life.
As an introvert I've found drawing to be a more direct way for me to talk about my inner feelings and thoughts than words or any other creative medium. My drawings are a record of time, a mash-up of real and imagined happenings, and a way for me to be mindful about what brings me (and hopefully others) joy.
Sometimes I work on projects that are intentionally communal and collaborative in nature. Sometimes I make work that I hope might make its way into someone's home as a treasured object of contemplation and connection.
Recurring themes in my work are animals (especially ones that are my neighbors), plants, portals, and sometimes animal/people hybrids. Maybe someday I'll make a drawing and I'll get to step into it and travel around its reality for awhile. Until then I'll keep connecting to the materiality of papermaking, and the mark making language of drawing to transport me in a different way.
